As the third largest City in Germany Munich is the beating heart and soul of Bavaria. It is extremely safe and clean, yet fun and exciting.
Despite being German, almost everyone knows some English, so it is easy to find your way around Munich if you are English speaking. Munich is a major tourist destination for many excellent reasons. Here are a few things that we recommend you to see while there:
- Marienplatz. This is a pedestrian zone and is probably the most popular single area of the city for tourists. From the incredible New City Hall (see below), to a myriad of shops, cafes, and street performers, this is where you should start.
- Neues Rathaus, or New City Hall. This amazing Neo-Gothic building is covered in gargoyles and dragons. It also has the world famous Glockenspiel (carillon) and its tower - 85m - offers a great photo opportunity of the center of the city.
- Münchener Freiheit & Schwabing. For the nightlife, Munich has clubs for every taste scattered throughout the city. If you do not know what you want, consider starting in these districts, which offer quite a few nightclubs.
- Schloss Nymphenburg. This was the summer palace of the former royal family of Bavaria. Only a small portion of the palace itself is open to tourists, but the enormous gardens are free, except the minor palaces in the gardens.
- BMW. If you have had enough of old buildings, check out the BMW Headquarters building, the BMW Museum, and the BMW Welt. Each are marvels of modern architecture and you can learn about BMW cars and bikes.
Beyond the above, Munich offers many one-of-a-kind museums of different types as well as hundreds of other attractions. If you are only there for a brief period of time, it might be worth doing some research before you go to squeeze in as much as you can.
